Christmas Markets

No trip to Riga during the festive period is complete without exploring the wonderful Riga Christmas markets. When it comes to the festive season, this city goes all out! Riga was, in fact, last year ranked as the best value location for a festive winter break by the Post Office Travel, so it's a budget-friendly place to spend Christmas. You'll want to visit the Cathedral Square Christmas market, which is Riga's most traditional market where there's dozens of stalls offering fine crafts, jewellery, food and festive gifts. Also, make sure you explore Riga Central Market, here you'll find locally crafted gifts, decorations and more. This market is the largest of its kind in Europe and a designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's nothing quite like a Christmas market to get you into the festive spirit!

Area

Whilst Dodo Hotel offers a welcome retreat in a quiet area of the city to which you can return to after a busy day, don't mistake that from being outside of all the excitement. Step outside the hotel and you'll find a tram stop connecting you to all areas of Riga in a matter of minutes. Pedestrian-only Old Town has become a popular entertainment district of the historic capital, where you'll find architectural gems, and abundance of eateries, bars and stores, and the bustling Livu Square. Spead your arms out on Rozena Street, the narrowest street in Riga where you can touch opposite walls at once, and visit the souvenir stalls on Skarnu Street. Take in the stunning cityscape views of Riga's Gothic spires from the 72-meter high St Peter’s Church tower, spend the afternoon in one of the many art galleries or history museums, and experience city-centre tranquillity with a visit to John’s Courtyard or Konventa Courtyard. Other must-see sights include the landmark House of the Black Heads, St. Peter's Church, The Freedom Monument and Riga Central Market - one of Europe's largest markets and bazaars selling everything from local produce to traditional clothes, all under the adjoining roofs of former Zeppelin hangers. What's more, if your visit lands over the festive season you'll notice that Latvians celebrate Winter Solstice with gusto. Not every Christmas is a white one, but it is easy to get in the seasonal spirit with scents of fresh gingerbread, mulled wine, candles and traditional delicacies floating from the many stalls around the city. Pick up lovely hand-knitted gifts and delicious delights from markets on Doma laukums and Līvu laukums squares, and be sure to visit the cute 'village' (populated by real rabbits) in Esplenāde Park. It really is the most wonderful time of the year...
